Our building for April, as interpreted by HEDQF ‘Artist in Residence’ Bill Hunt, is the Institute of Education now part of UCL.
Completed 1976
Architect: Denis Lasdun
Listed Grade II
Interesting Fact: Denis Lasdun was appointed by the University of London in 1960 for a major building in Bedford Way based on a master plan published by Sir Leslie Martin and Trevor Dannatt the year before.
Lasdun had been inspired by working with Wells Coates and Berthold Lubetkin, and his unique understanding of the later generation of the Brutalists makes him a comparable figure with Louis I Kahn (Salk Institute).
It was controversial project generating considerable protests and objections but it is now listed and is being restored by UCL.
