West Downs Centre, University of Winchester

Date & Time:Tuesday 28th February 2023 (PM)
Over 30 people attended our latest building study visit to Design Engine’s West Downs Centre at the University of Winchester on 28th February 2023.  Here’s our chair Trevor Wills trying out the very popular contemplation pods which are just one of the thoughtful interventions to support student wellness.  See the full case study here, and also the Design Engine flyer accessible from the link to the right of this page.

The newly constructed £40m landmark West Downs Centre at the University of Winchester was recently completed and fully operational for the 2021/2022 academic year. It is home to the Digital Technologies computer and digital-related degree programmes and business and management programmes. Cutting edge facilities include a drum-shaped 250-seat auditorium, art gallery, café, food hall, shop, library, social learning areas and teaching spaces.

As part of the core values of the university it has been important that the building focussed on supporting the mental health and well-being of the individual and collective users. The central water garden, the gallery, vegan cafe, inclusion of artwork and the Contemplation Space are all focused on the wellbeing benefits to staff and students.

The building was among the first university projects to be registered for WELL Certification within the UK, and is in the process of being awarded the WELL Platinum standard.
